The Art
of Riding:
Harmony with Horses

The Horse’s Mind
Learning about horse behavior, and the differences in “wiring” between
hunter (human) and hunted (horse), offers the key to the horse’s mind. When
we tune in to how horses live and operate through feel, we understand
better, present our requests better, and respond and teach better. This
develops the horse’s confidence, trust and respect for us – and his desire
to perform.
The Horse’s Body and Movement
To ride in harmony is to ride with the horse’s movement, like surfing,
not against it. It is to become the horse. As the famous martial artist,
Bruce Lee, said “Put water into a cup, it becomes the cup: be water, my
friend”. For this, we need to feel and ride how the horse moves, with poise
and balance – not sit! For clear communication, we need focus and timely use
of our seat, legs and hands independently, as well as conscious control of
our life energy and a decisive line of sight. When we can “ride the wave”,
and “lead the mind”, the horse follows with elasticity and athleticism.
The Horse’s Heart and Desire
As we build knowledge and skills, our confidence grows. Time for more fun
with horses! Students go for trail rides, ride over jumps, ride cross
country, ride set patterns, do communication challenges, games and more,
according to skill level and desire. |
